The Case for AERO Now: 63% Below Its High, One Day Before Everything Changes
AERO trades at $0.87 today โ 63% below its all-time high of $2.32, hit in December 2024 โ for a protocol that processed $130 million in swap fees over the past year and controls roughly 63% of all DEX volume on Base. Tomorrow evening, that protocol relaunches as Aero across seven chains, with 100% of exchange revenue flowing directly to stakers. The price is low. The catalyst is 24 hours away.
The business behind the token
Aerodrome is not a speculative bet on future revenue. It is already the dominant exchange on Base, Coinbase's Ethereum Layer 2, with $3.72 billion in Slipstream DEX volume over the past seven days and $400 million in total value locked as of this morning. Base itself holds $6.14 billion in total value locked, and Aerodrome sits at the center of it.
The flywheel is working exactly as designed. More volume generates more fees, which attract more liquidity, which tightens spreads, which pulls in more volume. Co-founder Alexander Cutler put it plainly at the Digital Asset Summit on October 11: "If you win liquidity, you win more trades, you win more fees, you win more revenue, and then you can inject that value right back into the system." He called Aerodrome's run on Base proof that the playbook works โ the protocol started with a few million dollars in deposits and grew to 60โ70% of Base's on-chain activity.
"I think it's going to be a lot of fireworks."
โ Alexander Cutler, Co-founder, Aerodrome Finance, Digital Asset Summit, Oct. 11, 2026The tokenized-stocks chapter adds a second engine. When Coinbase launched tokenized U.S. equities โ NVDAc, AAPLc, METAc, GOOGLc โ on Base on August 24, Aerodrome captured roughly 77% of total tokenized-stock DEX volume in the following 30 days, translating to about $176 million in trades from a product available only to non-US users and just four tickers. That kind of structural moat โ fastest liquidity, tightest spreads, dominant market share โ is what the merger now takes to six additional chains.
At a market cap of roughly $870 million, AERO trades at approximately 6.7 times the past year's swap fees. That multiple prices in very little of what changes tomorrow.
What changes at launch
Aerodrome today runs a ve(3,3) model: holders lock AERO to receive veAERO, then vote every week โ epochs turn on Thursdays at midnight UTC โ on which liquidity pools receive that week's AERO emissions. Fees and incentives flow only to pools you voted for; if you don't vote, you earn nothing from exchange revenue. Supply grows every week as new AERO is emitted to liquidity providers, with a rebase partially offsetting dilution for lockers. Velodrome runs an identical but separate model on OP Mainnet with its own token, VELO, and a much smaller fee base.
Aero replaces all of that. Emissions end on both legacy platforms at launch. veAERO and veVELO locks convert to staked sAERO automatically, with remaining lock periods rounded up to the week. Weekly voting is replaced by real-time allocation with a 47-hour cooldown on initial changes. And the revenue model flips entirely: 100% of exchange revenue streams directly to AERO stakers, with no private token sales and no value leaking elsewhere.
| Today | After launch | What it means for a holder |
|---|---|---|
| AERO (Aerodrome) and VELO (Velodrome) โ two separate protocols | One token, AERO; VELO converts at ~0.044 new AERO; AERO converts 1:1 | Aerodrome holders receive ~94.5% of the merged supply, absorbing Velodrome's entire fee base for a ~6% supply increase. |
| Weekly AERO emissions to liquidity providers; rebase for lockers | Emissions end on both legacy platforms at launch; Predictive Allocation replaces weekly schedule | Supply dilution from weekly emissions stops the moment the new protocol goes live. |
| Weekly vote (epoch) required; non-voters earn no fees | Real-time allocation; 47-hour cooldown on initial changes | Stakers no longer need to vote weekly to participate in revenue; the active management burden drops significantly. |
| Fees flow only to pools a veAERO holder voted for that week | 100% of exchange revenue streams to all AERO stakers | Every staker receives a share of the full $130M annual fee run rate, not just the pools they happened to vote for. |
| Total supply ~2.002B AERO (CoinGecko, Oct. 20) | ~2.12B after VELO conversion (~116M new AERO added) | A ~6% supply increase brings in Velodrome's entire liquidity base and OP Mainnet fee stream. |
| Base and OP Mainnet (two separate deployments) | Seven chains: Base, Ethereum, OP Mainnet, Arbitrum, Robinhood Chain, Arc, Ink | Fee revenue compounds across five additional chains, all flowing back to the same staker pool. |
Practical steps and dates. The conversion is not automatic for wallet holders. After claiming any outstanding rewards and clearing existing votes, AERO and VELO holders must convert through the official portal at aero.xyz. Coinbase will support the AERO/VELO migration during a November 2โ4, 2026 window. The launch itself goes live Wednesday, October 21, at 8:00 PM EDT.
Key insights
- $130M in annual swap fees, 6.7x multiple. At an $870M market cap, AERO is priced at roughly 6.7 times the past year's swap fees โ fees that, after tomorrow, go entirely to stakers rather than being distributed only to active weekly voters.
- 63% of Base, 77% of tokenized stocks. Aerodrome already dominates its home chain and captured the majority of an entirely new asset category within days of launch. The growth playbook Cutler described โ win liquidity, win trades, win fees, reinvest โ has a live proof of concept.
- Velodrome absorbed for ~6% dilution. Converting all of VELO at 0.044 adds roughly 116 million new AERO while bringing Velodrome's full fee base and OP Mainnet TVL under the same staker pool. The terms heavily favor existing AERO holders, who represent ~94.5% of new supply.
- Price is recovering into the launch. AERO pulled back about 15% between October 16 and October 19, then began recovering. At $0.87 this morning โ 63% below the December 2024 high โ the token is entering one of the most significant protocol upgrades in its history near a recent low.
- Seven-chain expansion starts fresh, but the playbook is proven. Cutler's pushback on the "head start" question matters: Aerodrome wasn't first on Base either. It started small and compounded. The open question is whether the same flywheel ignites on Ethereum mainnet, Arbitrum, and Robinhood Chain โ but the mechanism is the same one that already works.
What to expect
- Launch goes live October 21 at 8:00 PM EDT. Volume and fee data from seven chains will begin appearing on DefiLlama within days; the first real read on whether Aero's multi-chain expansion is generating meaningful new fees will likely come within the first two weeks.
- If Aero replicates even a fraction of Aerodrome's Base dominance on one or two of the new chains, the annual fee run rate would rise materially above $130M โ and with 100% of that revenue now directed to stakers, the yield per token would likely reprice AERO's market cap upward.
- The Coinbase migration window of November 2โ4 will be a focal point for exchange-held tokens moving into staking; any meaningful shift from passive holding to active staking would reduce circulating sell pressure while increasing the staker base receiving revenue.
- AERO's 30-day return of roughly 33% heading into launch, against a still-63%-below-high price, suggests the market has begun pricing in the catalyst but has not finished. The distance to the prior high implies significant room if the launch metrics hold.
